Falcons running back Michael Turner endorses Active Therapy Socks

Michael Turner, 2009 Pro Bowl running back for the Atlanta Falcons, is the official face – no, make that the legs – of the partnership between the National Football League franchise and SIGVARIS and its Active Therapy socks (athleticrecoverysock.com).

The Atlanta Falcons team is being supplied Performance and Athletic Recovery socks for the 2010-11 and 2011-12 seasons. The socks are to be worn after games, practices, training sessions and during travel.

Jonas Thelin, marketing director of SIGVARIS North America, said that a growing trend among competitive athletes is the use of compression therapy socks to help improve their athletic performance. Compression therapy is a hot topic in sports media right now as a growing number of triathletes, marathon runners and professional sports athletes are trying compression socks during performance to improve their results.

“It’s exciting to see players like Michael Turner of the Atlanta Falcons and Joseph Addai of the Indianapolis Colts endorsing our socks,” Thelin said.

“Many other athletes have also tried and are experiencing for themselves the benefits of wearing true graduated compression.”

In addition to NFL running backs Turner and Addai, other athletes who have endorsed SIGVARIS Active Therapy products include Brittany Lincicome of the Ladies Professional Golf Association; David O’Meara, The One Mile Runner; Alexandra Graebe, professional cyclist; and Tyler McCandless, professional distance runner.

On Nov. 10, those attending the North American Thrombosis Forum’s Celebration of Gratitude honoring Terry Francona, Boston Red Sox manager and blood clot survivor, received “red socks” provided by SIGVARIS, according to Judith Brannan, SIGVARIS medical affairs and education manager.

“SIGVARIS became the global leader in medical compression therapy by caring about the health of the people who wear our products,” Brannan said.

“We wanted to help raise awareness about the dangers of DVT because many people develop blood clots in their leg. As a company, we strive to help people have healthy legs, and our DVT prevention campaign allows us to fulfill our mission to educate everyone about how to keep their legs healthy.”

What’s the best compression sock for men?

I’m asked frequently, what’s the best compression sock for men….

There are a lot of considerations for men, but in reality, they’re no different than women’s. If they’re not comfortable, we probably won’t wear them. If they’re difficult to don (put on), we’ll wear them very infrequently (or else they’ll just collect dust in the dresser right next to the heart-covered Valentine’s day boxers she bought us last February). If they don’t match with what we wear to work, they’ll never be worn.

For me, I happen to be a very big fan of the SIGVARIS 230 series for men. They can easily be disguised as regular socks when worn with slacks, a suit, or even just my good old Banana Republic khakis. SIGVARIS 230 Series Compression Sock for Men

They aren’t 100% cotton… that would be impossible in a compression sock because the compressive agent isn’t cotton, but the interesting thing about the 232c (20-30mmHg strength cotton sock) is that it’s 100% cotton on the inside (the part that touches the skin). This is great for me because my feet and toes are a bit sensitive and this cotton (Supima Cotton)  is hypo-allergenic and ideal for skin allergies. As with all SIGVARIS products, they’re high-stretch and use the double-covered yarn manufacturing process. This makes donning far easier than most other compression socks. Additionally, the new “foot release zone” allows more comfort and less of a scrunch of the feet and toes. Colors: I’m not a big fan of the name “black mist” for their gray color, but the sock itself is a winner… can even be worn with jeans.

I’ve worn the 230 series sock for as much as 15 straight hours and din’t once have to hike them back up my leg…. since they’re properly graduated medical compression, along with a nice top-band that doesn’t dig in, they stay up just fine.

Give ‘em a shot… I think you’ll be pleased. Comment below and let me know how you like ‘em!
